Using SheepShaver to create a bootable System 7 disk image for BlueSCSI & ZuluSCSI

This tutorial shows how to use a modern Mac and the vintage Mac emulator SheepShaver to create your own bootable System 7.5.3 disk image, and pre-load it with all the necessary utilitie...

    This is WAY too complicated for me. I bought the BlueSCSI V2 and formatted it as OS extended and the SD card mounts as a 64GB volume. I then inserted the SC card into the BlusSCSI V2 that is connected to a scsi cable in my 7500/100 and proceeded to boot from the 8.5 install CD and then restart and then reboot again from the 8.6 updater CD and restarted and I have a 7500/100 running with a 64GB SCSI HDD! However after watching what you do here I haven't got a clue what to do with the 7500 as eBay etc has almost zero vintage software CD's to run in 8.6...... I am so baffled. Monterey 12.7.3 will NOT work with any IMG, DMG or ISO or ZIP files. It just asks for an application to do this. What am I missing?? So frustrating.

    Great video! I have one question: In the old days of using real hardware, we had specific versions of System 7.5 etc for specific models, along with system enabler files. In your initial steps, you chose a 9500 ROM and the complimentary OS, but your physical vintage Mac was not a 9500. In your configuration, everything just worked. However, how would one know which ROM and system installer to choose for creating the SheepShaver environment, ensuring that these initial choices will deliver a bootable system on actual vintage Macintosh hardware? Your instructions and steps are so clear and easy to follow. Much appreciated! Thank you, Bruce.

    • @BranchusCreations
      @BranchusCreations 6 дней назад

      When I installed 7.5.3, I selected the option for a universal install, so that it would include all the necessary files for the system to work on any Macintosh (that is capable of running 7.5.3). The system enablers you refer to are mainly required for system 7.1, and a few for 7.5, but by 7.5.3 the need for enablers is gone.

    Thanks, very informative. I am experimenting with the idea of using ultrasonic cavitation to speed up cold brew coffee making in a five gallon keg. The keg is being slowly rotated so a battery source will need to be used (my dad was a slip ring engineer, not going that route). I doubt I will need the same capacity of an ultrasonic cleaner but just enough to vibrate the coffee grounds inside the keg. Coffee geeks have been experimenting with this idea for years...

      There is no proper one, it is alleged that Inventec Chemicals have been selling a product labeled as "V2" but it actually contains "ASM" formula in the tube. My recommendation is to avoid them altogether and buy Stirri branded fluxes. I reviewed their products here and it's all I use now: ruclips.net/video/805T3wvLxVg/видео.html

      @BranchusCreations 12 дней назад

      This is the first part of a series of 3 videos, but very little of it is current anymore. The summary is that it is alleged that Inventech Chemicals have been selling flux of formula 'A' with a label incorrectly stating it is formula 'B', and apparently they are still doing it. It is my recommendation not to buy from them but to buy flux from Stirri. That's what I use and it's a quality product.

    Excellent video, I appreciate how thorough this is, as I'm a beginner so the information was very helpful. It's also helpful how you showed how to solder wires as well as spots on a board, other videos I've seen only show one or the other. And none of them show so clearly what you are doing, on top of the very detailed explanation. This was a very helpful video, I am a lot more informed now! I'll probably do some practicing to make sure I have everything down before I do the actual soldering job too....This was a very helpful video, I'll probably bookmark it in case I need to go back to it for reference. Great job!

    I have a samsung aircon remote control with the smallest copper tracks you ever did see. I purchased the strongest reading glasses I could buy and they certainly magnified enough for me to do the job. I am normally ik doing these types of jobs but your video was so brilliant that it made my task run so smoothly. If I can impart some helpful hints, theys are: The board in the damaged tracks were corroded and bluish green corrosion product over the tracks. Possibly copper Chloride. I successfully removed this with a fine stiff paintbrush agitating CilitBang (citric acid) on the area and leaving it for 20mins. Then washed it off with water and dabs of tissue. The other tip I used was as the break in the tracks were so small, I shone a torch light from the otherside of the board and then the broken track could easily be observed.. Thankyou once again for such a down to earth and well informed video, you are quite a star.

    *I built one using a squirrel cage blower salvaged from a powerful dehumidifier, a dryer exhaust hose, some lumber and other parts until it was sealed airtight in a window and my hose pulled up both fumes and material to be expelled outdoors.* The drawback is ultimately that even with a highly powerful squirrel cage blower, *I need to build another that uses the blower out of a dryer I salvaged.* I realized that in large part, you're really trying to achieve the effect of a giant shop vac and to be truly effective, these machines need to have the force to snatch up large pieces of material, and then you can watch and see that not a single-colored fume escapes. *My current unit looks just about identical to yours in the demonstration, and IMO after using it a couple years, is just "okay" and these devices just need to be incredibly powerful.* The boil down is something is better than nothing and if functions in the fashion of a true fume extractor, the difference in exposure will be phenomenally lower. Ultimately, I want a unit running in the room as a secondary hepafilter in unity with the fume extractor that evacuates tremendous quantities of gas directly outside.

      @@BranchusCreations Great review but for the love of God, how do I get my Mac 8.5 universal install CD to install to a BlueSCSI V2? I emailed Juicy Crumb but all I got was a lot of technical stuff about needing disc images and to download everything from mac garden or something. I have a few SD cards here but can't work out if I have to format them in my Macbook Pro running Monterey or do I simply remove the original 1GB IBM Apple stickered HDD from my 7500/100 and then plug in the BlueSCSI and then insert install CD and hold down C key? I just don't want to spend AU$130 to realize I'm not tech savvy enough to do this. Sorry to take up your time.

      @@theaustralianconundrum You should be able to follow the steps from my BlueSCSI/SheepShaver video, but just use the 8.5 Installer CD image instead of there 7.5.3 image. You can download the image from the Macintosh Garden. Though I would recommend 8.6 as it's more stable.

      @@BranchusCreations Thanks for the reply. I have original Apple 8.5 universal installer CD and the 8.6 updater CD so I've used them and restarted and running sweet. I found some unarchiver app that seems to convert all the vintage software I am after and I'm just shutting down the 7500 and removing the SD card and letting my Macbook Pro surf the net for all the vintage Mac software sites.
